AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS

N.B. Topics A to E will be presented 3 times.  Topics B to E have space limited to 20-25 persons per session. Topic A - Airway: limit 12 persons per session.  Special Simulator Topic F has only 2 sessions and each is limited to 12 persons. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  When completing the registration form, indicate your choices in order of preference from 1 to 6.


WORKSHOP TOPICS

A.    The Difficult Airway - Application of New Technology
           Edward Crosby, MD / Ian Zunder, MD

Location:Salon MacDonald (Mezzanine)

A hands-on worshop with training to use new airway aids such as the intubating LMA, the lighted stylet, the Bullard laryngoscope.  Case scenarios for discussion as well.
(Note limit: 4 stations x 3 persons = 12)

B.    Spinal Anaesthesia in Obstetrics
          Roanne Preston, MD / Catherine Gallant, MD

Location:Salon Palladian (Mezzanine)

Case discussions to highlight the practical use of spinal anaesthesia - emergency C sections and the so-called "walking epidural"

C.    Anaesthesia and Critical Care
          Jonathan Hooper, MD / Lawrie Garnett, MD

Location:Salon L'Orangerie (Mezzanine)

Challenging clinical cases - not only for anaesthetists who work in critical care but for all of us who must from time to time bring a sick ICU patient to the OR.

D.    PreAdmission Assessment Unit
           Christopher Wherrett, MD / Gregory Bryson, MD

Location: Laurier Room (AM Lecture Room)

Case discussion will highlight not only the interesting clinical problems one meets in a PAU but also the practical approach to making a PAU work.

E.    Practical, Cost-Effective Low-Flow Anaesthesia
          Donald Miller, MD

Location:Salon Burgundy (Mezzanine)

Practical tips on using low-flow anaesthesia, how it benefits patients and hospital budgets.

F.    Anaesthesia Simulator
          Robert Elliott, MD / Patti Murphy, MD

Location: Heart Institute - 5th Floor

An introduction to the UofO Patient Care Simulator with discussion of the value in anaesthesia training as well as crisis management.  Simulations will be run with UofO residents in the "hot-seat" in stop-action mode for participant input.  Hands-on opportunities available as well. (Limit - 12 persons per session.)
