Course Objectives
Upon completion of this seminar, participants will:
- understand the common issues which influence patient safety and outcomes in contemporary anesthesia practice
- understand the importance of drug errors in the perioperative period
- develop strategies to improve drug safety in anesthesia
- understand the role of closed claims analysis in identifying issues in patient safety in anesthetic practice
- apply the lessons learned from closed claims analysis to formulate changes in anesthetic practice to enhance patient safety
- identify the risk factors associated with adverse outcomes following ambulatory surgery
- understand the incidence and nature of adverse events following ambulatory surgery
- identify mechanisms whereby potentially fatal PCA errors occur
- characterize an “ideal” PCA pump design
- understand the potential risks of the new anticoagulants in patients receiving major conduction anesthesia
- become familiar with how databases can be used to enhance patient safety
