Dr. Homer Yang

... (continued) ... After his appointment as an examiner for five years on the Anesthesia Board of Examinations, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, he was appointed as the Chief Examiner in 1996 – 2001. During 1996 – 2003, he was also appointed as the Professor and Chair of Anesthesia at McMaster University. Since 2003, he has been the Chairman at the Department of Anesthesia, University of Ottawa, and Anesthesia-in-Chief at the Department of Anesthesia, The Ottawa Hospital. During his career, he has received awards for Best Clinical Teacher, and has been involved in undergraduate PBL teaching of medical students and postgraduate education. The Royal College Anesthesia Examinations were completely reformed during his tenure as Chief Examiner with well proven validity and reliability. For the last decade, his research has been on perioperative cardiovascular complications. The publication of the results from the Metoprolol after Vascular Surgery (MaVS) and the most recent completion of Perioperative Ischemia Evaluation Trial (POISE) are instrumental in casting a more balanced approach to perioperative beta-blodker usage. Since his arrival in Ottawa, the Anesthesia Assistant program has been significantly expanded, from eight within the University of Ottawa system to now over twenty.
